PAINT CLEANING - PHASE 1
Preparation
of the painted surface the first time that you wax your bike is
one of the most critical steps you can take to achieve maximum results.
Surface preparation is the process that removes embedded particles
and contaminants from the paint surface. These contaminants were
not removed during the washing process. These include industrial
fallout, tree sap, paint overspray, and paint oxidation. When in
doubt, always use the least aggressive cleaner for the job. Below
is a brief synopsis of cleaning products that are available.
Liquid Cleaners - These types of cleaners are usually referred to
as chemical cleaners. They are not as aggressive as abrasive cleaners,
and are much safer and usually more than adequate for most painted
surfaces. They are generally used for removing old wax, contaminants
such as stains, oxidation, tar, and bug spattering. They should
be considered very seriously as a first step in paint preparation
for anyone trying to achieve depth of shine. Waxes will shine; cleaners
and glazes are where you will achieve the depth and gloss in paint.
Compounds - These usually come in a paste form and are for the more
aggressive type situations or problems, such as heavy oxidation,
severe scratches and actual blending of the paint. Compounds in
this category are considered to be abrasive type cleaners. They
can usually be acquired in three grades. Polishing compounds are
the least aggressive followed by medium and heavy cut. A compound
in the hands of a novice is almost assuredly a recipe for disaster.
Clay Bars - Clay bars have the capability of literally pulling contaminants
and overspray off the paint. They do this by lifting contaminants
and carrying them away from the painted surface in the clay material.
Clay bar products should be used with caution because the potential
surface scratching is considerable if care is not exercised. Also,
a clay bar should never be used without a spray lubricant, which
allows them to glide across the surface and reduce friction. Be
sure to inspect the clay bar regularly for contaminants. Should
they appear, immediately fold over into a new section to prevent
scratching the paint. If the clay bar is ever dropped, discard it
immediately and purchase another, or paint damage will occur from
contaminants picked up on the ground. Clay bars have specific benefits.
They can be used in a relatively short amount of time and aid in
polishes and waxes being applied and removed more effectively. The
paint will also look cleaner and be easier to maintain.
