CLEANING THE PAINT - PHASE 2 - SEALING AND GLAZING
If you could
see your bike's paint magnified, it would look like a miniature
mountain range. Because of the hills and valleys, light is
reflected at different angles reducing the appearance of depth.
Custom & show bikes go through extra steps in the paint process
to achieve flattest paint surface possible. The surface is
sanded with 1,500 to 2,000 grit, wet sand paper, which is referred
to as wet sanding. This process will allow the light to reflect
like a mirror. Sealing and glazing can achieve a similar effect.
Sealers and glazes will enhance the painted surface by smoothing
out the hills and filling in the valleys. They also refresh the
paint with oils that are lost during oxidation caused by UV damage.
By sealing and glazing, you will get that extra depth of shine that
we all admire. You should always use a quality 100% cotton terry
applicator when applying sealer and glaze. Plan on using at least
two applicators for this job. That will prevent the sealer and glaze
from drying on the applicator and causing scratches from the hardening
of the residue. Do not apply the product directly on the painted
surface. Apply the product to the applicator, fold the applicator
and blot the product evenly over the applicator, which will enable
an even application of the product. Always do small sections at
a time. Let the sealer and glaze dry to a fine haze then buff with
clean 100% cotton or microfiber towel. As with applicators be prepared
to use several towels. You will know its time to change towels when
you notice a slight resistance between the towel and the painted
surface. Always wash your applicators and towels in mild soap and
rinse thoroughly. Never use liquid fabric softener or dryer sheets.
The residue left on your towels can cause streaking. Once the bike's
fenders, ferring and tanks has been completely sealed and glazed,
it is important to immediately follow up with a quality wax or polish.
Cleaning, sealing, and glazing will clean the paint, but will do
nothing to protect it from the same contaminants that you have just
removed.
